The
Mosquito Magnet® was recently rated by Consumer
Reports in their May 2003 edition in the article "Should
you trap or zap?"
Three
traps from different manufacturers were put to the test
by Consumer Reports:
- The
Mosquito Magnet Liberty from American Biophysics
Corp.
- The Mosquito Trap MK01 from Lentek
- The SonicWeb ICH500 from Applica
How
the traps were tested:
A
couple thousand mosquitoes were released into a 25-by-30-foot
sealed room with a trap at one end. About half of the
mosquitoes were Culex quinquefasciatus, a species
that has helped spread West Nile virus. The rest were
Aedes aegypti, a common southern species that
is "especially tenacious in its pursuit of people".
Each
trap was run for 20 hours, half of which was in the
dark. Then, the number and species of mosquitoes caught
in each device was recorded.
How
the Magnet Liberty performed:
Within
minutes of entering the test chamber, swarms of mosquitoes
were clustered around the Magnet Liberty
and by the end of its 20 hours, the Magnet Liberty
had caught about three-fourths of the mosquitoes.
The
Consumer Reports Ratings:
- American Biophysics
Mosquito Magnet Liberty:
"The best combination of performance and convenience."
- Lentek Mosquito
Trap MK01: "Worked as well as the Magnet
Liberty, but less convenient."
- Applica
SonicWeb ICH500: "Captured fewer mosquitoes
than the others, but most convenient."
